About Me

028_25Ae.jpg

I am an ex-urbanite who escaped the city life and has lived for the past 28 years in a rural, mountainous area of Virginia that in colonial and early-American times was part of the "Backcountry." This is the true melting pot of the U.S.A., its culture and traditions dominated by "born fighting" Scotch-Irish immigrants and enhanced by German, Highland Scot, Dutch, Welsh, and yeoman English settlers. Having absorbed and inculcated the history, values and views of the Backcountry, I would like to share insights, information, and viewpoints from the place where America began. - - Jay Henderson

Appalachian Autumn 2009

We live on the western edge of the Ridge and Valley Province of the Appalachian Mountains.  The landscape is defined by long ridge mountains, with coves nestled in higher elevations and river valleys in the limestone and shale formations below.

The Autumn turning of the leaves this year has been slow, giving us a long season of fall color.  The images in this article are from the past week. There is still color developing and even when the maples have yellowed out the oaks will endure.

we took most of today off to drive away and look at the fall colors.
This is going to be one of the best years I can remember.
I was thinking about Burke's garden the other day.....

Hi Jay,

I don't know what has been wrong lately, but I have tried to send you several messages and they don't seem to go through. I love all the pictures of the mountains. Tony and I are hoping to head that way in time to catch some of the color. I was dismayed by your news about the insurance turn down. I've heard and read so much about the pros and cons of the different plans that are on board for change. What are your thoughts about the current situation and where our best hopes lie. The refusal of the PET scan is criminal. What a hell of a situation to be in. Please keep me updated. I read all your mail and welcome any news.

Lovely photos of the VA countryside, Jay! Mark and I are living in North GA... right below the Tenn -N.C dividing state line. We are living in similar terrain!! I love it!

The Fall colors here are coming on strong! We'll be peaking this week if the rain doesn't wash away all of the leaves.

take care!
love M
