Audubon Christmas Bird Count

If you haven't already signed up, there's still time to join the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count. This long-running project -- this year will be the 110th count -- allows researchers, biologists, and others to study the health and status of bird populations across North America. You can access a pdf file on the Christmas Bird Count process here.
While you're thinking of it, mark your calendars for the Great Backyard Bird Count on February 12-15, 2010.

Went on my first Christmas count when I was 14, almost 50 years ago ...
It's 17 degrees in the back yard today. Sammie, the terrier mix, went out to take care of business and sent me plaintive looks to my watchpost at the bedroom window. She got an extra cookie and a warm place on my bed as a reward. Meanwhile, chickadees, tufted titmice, and puffy little wrens filled up on safflower seeds. I really need to get some suet out. The cold came quickly and froze the impatiens still abloom on the patio.
